New ICC law Changes

The following ICC Law changes are adapted by NWCL for all applicable games

1.) For 40 over league Only:

 Fielding Restrictions

~No more compulsory catchers required in Overs 1-8.
~No more batting Powerplay. That means its only first 8 overs of powerplay and that's it.
~5 fielders allowed outside the circle in overs 32-40 overs.  (Starting  of the 33 over)

2.) For Both T40 and T20's:

NO BALL

The bowler may not deliver the ball underarm. If a bowler bowls a ball underarm the umpire shall call and signal no ball, and the ball is to be re-bowled overarm.

 Free Hit

In addition to the above, the delivery following a no ball called (all modes of no ball) shall be a free hit for whichever batsman is facing it. If the delivery for the free hit is not a legitimate delivery (any kind of no ball or a wide ball) then the next delivery will become a free hit for whichever batsman is facing it.

For any free hit, the striker can be dismissed only under the circumstances that apply for a no ball, even if the delivery for the free hit is called wide ball.

Field changes are not permitted for free hit deliveries unless:

a) There is a change of striker

or

b) The No Ball was the result of a fielding restriction breach, in which case the field may be changed to the extent of correcting the breach.

The umpires will signal a free hit by (after the normal No Ball signal) extending one arm straight upwards and moving it in a circular motion.

Division I Playoffs Champions - MICROSOFT GREENS

Microsoft Greens emerge victorious in the 2012 Div-1 Premier League Playoff Championship finals

After winning the toss Greens opened their bowling with spinners Raghu and Arun. Vikrant and Rajiv opened the batting for Colts. Soon Arun got the better of Vikrant getting him caught at short extra cover off a dipping full toss. Raghu and Arun continued to bowl well with Raghu getting Abhishek bowled. In came Nilesh Rane for Colts and kept things steady for them along with Rajiv. The spinners kept a tight line and length and kept the scoring rate low. Their partnership was broken when Nikhil got the better of Rajiv right who was caught at extra covers. Nikhil bowled an excellent tight spell. Soon Vikrant followed up with the wicket of Nilesh Rane caught at long on. From then on Srini and Ravi kept their bowling really tight. Right when Phani was looking dangerous, Ashwin got him run out with a direct hit. The next ball, Neeraj got Mahesh run out with a direct hit. For Colts, Anurag batted well in the end with some big hits to get the scorecard moving and Colts ended up with a total of 168 in 40 overs.

Greens started their batting with Nikhil and Ashwin. The opening bowling pair of Praveen and Goutham bowling good line and were swinging the ball well. Goutham got Nikhil out lbw in his second over. Faisal walked and continued to show his excellent class and temperament with solid defense while putting away bad balls for boundaries. He had a good partnership with Ashwin before Ashwin was dismissed for lbw again by Goutham. Avinash who was the next batsman for Greens started with an aggressive play but soon got out caught at long on. Anurag got his wicket. Anurag continued to bowl a tight line and length while enticing Srini and Faisal to go after him. But the batsmen were sensible enough to play him off and not lose their wicket. Srini and Faisal put a good partnership. After Faisal got out Arun, Srini and Raghu ensured Greens got closer to their target by batting sensibly. Neeraj who walked in when the scores were tie finished off with a lofted shot for a single and scored the winning run for Greens. With that Greens became the NWCL Premier League Division-1 champions for 2012.

Greens began their season very well with 3 victories back to back. Ironically Redmond Colts were the first team to defeat Greens in the regular season. After that Greens had a roller coaster ride thought the regular season upto the play-offs. Well, this roller-coaster featured some excellent performances by individual players who ensured Greens were always in the game and in the fight.

Some of the highlights include.

· A hatrick by Ravi Bhayankaram against LWCC, taking crucial wickets. Ravi finished off with 5 wickets in that match and LWCC were all out for under 80 runs.

· Emergence of Vikrant Minhas as a key batsman scoring under pressure. One example is, Vikrant scored a crucial 45 runs against Redmond Colts to ensure a successful chase by Greens.

· A master class century by Srini Santhanam against Pacific Orcas. Srini out played every bowler that day and was a delight to watch. The faster the bowlers bowled, the faster the ball disappeared for a 6!

· Amidst all the good performances, the loss to Chak-de Oregon @ Marymoor was definitely the Low point of the season for Greens and kicked off an up and down ride for greens. It wasn’t just the loss but also the loss of Aravindh a key player who suffered a knee injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season.

· It was then that Greens started to play well and perform as a team and peak at the right times to qualify for
the play offs , win in the play offs and ultimately win the Division I Playoffs championship

DIVISION I CHAMPIONS - LWCC Eagles

Lake Washington Eagles fly high to reclaim Division I championship!

LWCC, commonly known as “club of friends” among the league, has always delighted their supporter and opponents with their consistent performance. This year under leadership of Viraj Desai, LWCC have earned Division-1 title for them. LWCC has gained this height by their hard-work and the right attitude for the game of Cricket.

 LWCC are champions because they:

 - Are selfless

In LWCC there is no ‘I’ in the team. Every LWCC team member has always put welfare of the team first over personal accomplishment.

 - Are enthusiastic

Eagles are enthusiastic people and we give energy to one another. Their enthusiasm attracts people into the group because of their high energy level. People are eager to be part of their Club.

 - Have vision

LWCC stay focused to their long term goals. While they have a lot of fun, enjoy each other’s company, they never lose focus on the ultimate purpose of playing cricket together with fun.

 - Are committed

Despite the many things that are trying to get their attention in their lives, LWCC has always kept themselves together.

 - Are adaptable

As a result, they are a united bunch of people that don’t make a big deal over small differences and constantly focus on what is common to them: the team vision.

 - Respect Opponents

LWCC has always respected their opponents off and on the field.

Highlights of LWCC’s journey this year (2012):

·        LWCC has won 9 out of 12 games played this year.

·        In the beginning Eagles struggled with their batting performance, while getting their opponents out with low scores.  During this time they managed to keep the games close and interesting even after the opponents scored 60-100 runs in the first inning.

·        Starting July, LWCC started putting good show in their batting innings, where they had a consistent support from the openers – Hiral, Arpan and Ashish.  Experienced middle order Lovekesh, Ketan, Nitin, Nikhil, and Viraj kept every game live providing enough challenge to their opponents.  Chintan, Shital, Praveen, and Samir helped achieving good target towards the end.  Though, the order was changed randomly in few games to provide everyone an equal chance to enjoy the nature of cricket at various different stages of the game.   Samir, Shital, and Hiral added an additional support to the bowling line up throughout the season.

·        While majority of the LWCC players started playing hardball cricket in Seattle only, they’ve been always known for one of the best fielding side in the league.  Eagles fielding continued impressed most of us for another year.  Chintan Mehta, with highest catches for Eagles, did an amazing job behind the wicket for Eagles.  This was just a 2nd year of him keeping with the hard ball.

·        Both games against Blues (1-1), game against Greens and Oregon (Eagles lost), and the game against Colts and Orcas (Eagles Won), can be considered Highlights for Eagles in 2012.

·        Anjum 4/15 vs Oregon, Hiral 4/12 vs Greens, Nikhil’s 5/17 vs Blues and 5/25 vs Chargers, Praveen 5/15 vs Colts and 5/38 vs Orcas (two consecutive 5 wickets haul) were the bowlers highlights in 2012.   Praveen has the highest number of wickets, 25, in Div-1.

·        Viraj’s 47(64) vs Blues, Lovekesh’s 75(78) vs Orcas and 74(72) vs Greens, Ketan’s 62(77) vs Greens, Nitin’s 53(50) vs Chargers, Shital’s 33(28) vs Blues were the innings highlights in 2012.

DIVISION II CHAMPIONS - OLYMPIC Hurricanes

One goal, Commitment, Consistency all the way… OCC’s Mission Accomplished!!!

A bunch of friends hang out all the time together, carrying the values of friendship, having fun and spending hours talking, watching the sport that they are passionate about, Cricket!!! Amidst all this, a splendid idea of playing together to bring Friendship, Fun & Passion on to the field as well, lead to the birth of Olympic Hurricanes in early summer of 2011.

One goal – To play and enjoy cricket at highest level in North West Cricket League, Division I

Commitment – Players commitment for two years, on and off the field, to achieve the goal

Consistency – Playing & delivering results consistently, as a team rather than as individuals

A hurried T20 season in 2011 helped all of us understand each other and prepare for our debut season in Division III. Completed a great season winning both the regular (12-0) and playoff (2-0) championships!

OCC’s entry to Division II was on the expected lines and we geared up to face the new challenges and opponents in second division. Second T20 season in 2012, playing in group A alongside the other leaders of the league brought us much closer and made it to the playoffs. Foundation was laid and set up the Hurricanes to go out and achieve their dream and goal, finish at the top and qualify for Division I for 2013.

Hurricanes began their quest with first game against Rainier, where Mahesh Jayaraman, Prithvi (5-fer) and CPR restricted Rainiers to paltry 52 runs and the batsmen saw the team through without much fuss. This was a perfect start for the season for Olympic Hurricanes, as they continued their winning ways with ease and comfort until a last wicket stand of 52 runs stopped their winning spree, just for one game though. Hurricanes were back in business winning the next few games and sending a strong message across until a rare and later order batting collapse resulted in their second loss of the season. Hurricanes were quick to put the past behind and kept winning the games from there on, finishing the regular season at 11-2 with one game getting washed out.

OCC’s strength, as per the cricketing pundits, is its bowling. A genuine ‘banana’ swing bowler Rajiv Nandivada making batsmen dance to the tunes of swing, is a treat to watch, especially from behind the wickets. Kamesh Jayaraman with his accuracy and knack of taking wickets at crucial junctures always propelled the team ahead of others. Mahesh Jayaraman with his ability to move the balls and make them raise sharply at the batsmen has always troubled them from getting off to a good start. Making the batsmen ‘smell the leather’ and keeping the fielders behind the stumps interested, Radhakrishna Yelamanchili, easily the quickest and the fastest in the league, helped the team’s cause of keeping the batsmen quiet and under check at all times. Sanjay Rama is no stranger to this league and need not mention much about his abilities here with the ball. Sanjay was always the go-to-bowler for the captain, as and when needed for the team. Sanjay’s 7 wicket performance is still fresh in our minds. Prithvi, CPR, and Aanshul supported well with their immaculate line & length and giving nothing away for the batsmen, taking wickets and stepping up as the lead bowlers as per the need and situation. Sahil Jolly, a newcomer with great skills and talent, settled well with the team and is the youngster to watch for in the upcoming seasons!

Olympic Hurricanes, time and again, were reminded that their batting needs to improve but OCC’s batsmen have proved everyone wrong with their consistent and cumulative effort to finish off the games successfully. OCC’s top order batsmen (Pradeep, Gaurav, Anand, Mahesh T, Chenchu) have always provided an aggressive and blazing starts, while the middle order batsmen (Sanjay, Kalyan, Raj, Rajesh, Rajiv, Radha) stabilized the innings and see the team through without any collapses, barring couple of occasions. Only to see our ‘ever-reliable’ captain Kamesh Jayaraman delivering true & spirited captains knocks. Kamesh, single handedly bailed us out to keep the winning momentum going, truly a great effort! There were two centuries made, one by the stylish Anand Vaidyanathan and the other by the elegant Chenchuram Mannam. Anand’s innings will be remembered for a while for the timing and placements of his shots during his record breaking 170 runs. While Chenchu was at his elegant best in his drives, pulls and punching shots of the back foot, scoring a chanceless 112 runs. There were quite a few gems of innings and partnerships on our road to championships but none can be rated higher than the 140+ runs unbeaten partnership between Rajiv Nandivada and Radhakrishna Yelamanchili, it was really a treat to watch and will be in the OCC players memories for a long time. These two amazing all-rounders were at their best hitting the ball all over the park, majority of the shots clearing the grounds by miles. OCC is also blessed with a group of folks that has helped them perform on the field with their fielding abilities, making it worse and hard for opponents to score off of them.

Last but not the least… Olympic Hurricanes feel proud to be led by Kamesh Jayaraman and Sanjay Rama, who both have led us from the front with their all-round skills and abilities and also in making sure that we keep our feet firmly on the ground. Kudos and thanks to the families and friends for supporting us on our journey and helping us achieve our goal and mission!!!

We are still the same bunch of friends hanging out all the time together, sipping countless pitchers of Beers, wings, fries, celebrating the ups and downs of this lovely game, Cricket!!! Hope to lead Olympic Hurricanes to another summer of fun loving cricket season, 2013.

Here we come, Division I…. Go CANES!

Preamble - Spirit of Cricket

Pre-amble: The Spirit of Cricket

Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captains.

1. There are two Laws which place the responsibility for the team’s conduct firmly on the captain.

Responsibility of captains

The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws.

Player’s conduct

In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or criticizing by word or action the decisions of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player’s captain, and instruct the latter to take action.

2. Fair and unfair play

According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play.

The umpires may intervene at any time and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required.

3. The umpires are authorized to intervene in cases of:

Time wasting

Damaging the pitch

Dangerous or unfair bowling

Tampering with the ball

Any other action that they consider to be unfair

4. The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for:

Your opponents

Your own captain and team

The role of the umpires

The game’s traditional values

5. It is against the Spirit of the Game:

To dispute an umpire’s decision by word, action or gesture

To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire

To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance:

a) to appeal knowing that the batsman is not out

b) to advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing

c) to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one’s own side

6. Violence

There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play.

7. Players

Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Every player is expected to make an important contribution to this.

UMPIRES REPORT - Great Job in reporting

< Courtesy - GP (Pacific Orcas) >

Following is my umpire's report for the game between MS Greens and Redmond Chargers on 3rd June at Marymoor Park.

I came to the ground at 10:03 am. The ground was all good to go. Stumps, boundary flags, 30-yard cones were are setup. I was totally impressed. Good job Greens.

Toss was at 10:20. MS Greens won the toss and elected to bat first.
Captains: TJ - MS Greens. SB - Redmond Chargers

Chargers had 8 players and a substitute at 10:30am. Chargers took the field about 10:34am and the actual game start time was 10:40am. 9th player arrived about that time and that is one of the reasons for the delay. One of the MS players and the 12th man were the substitutes initially for Chargers.

Overrate for Chargers was slower than ideal for the first half. But they made it up in the second half. I was periodically providing time left and number of overs more to bowl data to SB. He managed time in the second half very well and they finished their 40 overs just a couple of minutes over. MS Greens hit the ball out of the park quite a few times. We lost some time fetching the ball. I factored in the lost time to provide the target finish time for Chargers for their 40 overs. Since we did not lose too much time, I did not reduce the overs and instead reduced the time for lunch to 15 minutes. The original match ball was lost in the 18th over. Chargers did not come prepared with spare semi new balls. Greens offered a few to them. But Chargers decided to use a new ball and rub it on the dirt to bring it to a condition that was comparable to the lost one. After the ball was "prepared" by me, both teams had a look at it and resumed play.

As I mentioned earlier, I reduced the lunch time to 15 minutes because of some lost time during the first innings. Both teams cooperated and we did start after about 16 minutes of break.

Greens bowled 11 overs in the first hour. I gave this info to TJ who was then able to speed up the overrate. There was only one stop during the second innings, apart from the scheduled drinks break, due to Arvind getting injured on the field. Nothing serious. He was taken off the field and a substitute was brought in from Chargers. We lost about 2 minutes during this stoppage which was again factored into the target finish time for Greens. Greens like Chargers also finished their 40th over just a couple of minutes over time.

MS Greens beat Redmond Chargers by 11 runs (Greens - 238 and Chargers - 227). There were no disputes about the totals.

There were no untoward incidents either throughout the game. Both teams played with spirit and kept the game clean. Both captains stayed on top of their team members.

Suggestions to the NWCL management:

- remind every team that it is easy to lose the ball in most of the grounds including Marymoor park
- spare semi-new balls are more like a requirement for everygame and not nice to have for the teams
- send a note to Chargers asking them to make sure their players arrive on time
- clarify what the rule is on lost balls to every team

Thanks GP for a detailed report and great suggestions
